Ant Extermination
Ants are the dominant group of insects most closely related to wasps and bees. Not including the polar regions, ants are found in every place on earth, from deserts to jungles. In Michigan, there are seven main types of structure invasive ant species. They are: black carpenter ants, acrobat ants, pavement ants, odorous house ants, pharaoh ants, little black ants, and thief ants. Michigan ants range in size, from 1.5 inches long all the way down to 1/16th of an inch. Ants can be some of the most annoying pests and definitely some of the most resilient. Ants can be almost impossible for a typical home or business owner to exterminate on their own. Many over-the-counter products can actually cause ants to increase their reproduction
How Ants Get Inside
Of all insects, ants seem to be able to work their way inside better than any others. Since many of them are smaller than 1/2 inch, any crack or crevice around the foundation will allow them easy access. They are also subterranean and and dig their way underneath or around foundational dividers. Although sealing visible holes and cavities is a good idea to keep ants out, as well as all other pests, normally this method needs to be used along with other methods. Habitat alteration will significantly reduce all ant species’ ability to get inside. Keep organic debris away from the home. Make sure firewood is never stacked near the house. Trim trees and bushes away from the foundation to reduce harborage sites. Also, make sure food is cleaned up and the especially the on the floor. Eliminating the ants’ food source will help keep their reproduction numbers at a minimum.
