Despite its attention in the media, most people who contract the West Nile Virus (WNV) have no visible symptoms and have no idea they have even come in contact with the virus. According to Web MD, only 1 in 5 people infected with WNV will show visible symptoms. Infants and the elderly have the highest risks if they contract the virus. Whether you have a noticeable mosquito problem in the back yard, or are planning a camping trip, it's important to understand how to spot West Nile.
How West Nile is Transmitted
The virus starts with a mosquito that contracts the virus from infected birds, and then transfers it to a person while feeding off them. While summer brings warm weather, picnics, and swimming in the afternoon ā it also brings a swarm of mosquitoes. There have been reported cases in all 48 continental states, with numbers increasing over the last several years.
