Are you one of the millions of Americans currently stuck at home during the COVID-19 self-isolation? Homeowners now may have the time to complete tasks that were once on the bottom of their to-do list. Here are several things you can do to help prevent pests like ants, spiders, and wasps from entering your home this spring.

Deep Clean Garage

With temperatures continuing to rise, now is a good time to get into the garage and start organizing and cleaning. If you have any extra bins around, start by separating things into three categories:

  1. Sort
  2. Donate
  3. Maybe

Once you’ve sorted everything, we recommend taking a few days away from your maybe box. This will give you some time to process how important those items are in your life. Since most stores are closed right now, you’ll need to just set your donate box aside until you can take it to a drop-off location, or sell online. Put away all the items in your sort bin where they belong. Come back to your maybe bin and decide if you want to donate or sort those items to keep.

After you’ve sorted everything, take some time to knock webs down in the garage, sweep, and wipe down any storage and shelving. You may notice pest activity like mice droppings, spiders, or ants. If you do, contact us and we will set up a plan to treat your home as soon as possible.

Trim Bushes and Clean Up Gardens

When you’re not experiencing spring rains, take advantage of those sunny days and trim your bushes and clean up garden areas. Pests will live in dead leaves, on bushes, and in gardens. This will not only make your yard look well kept and maintained, but eliminate the amount of pest activity around the foundation.

Sort and Cleanout the Pantry

Since most of us have bought food for at least a week, it’s a good time to sort your pantry and clean it out. We’ve created a pantry cleaning checklist that outlines ways you can prevent pests from making it their new home.

  1. Pull food out of the pantry
  2. Wipe the storage furniture down
  3. Wipe down doors, door handles, windows, and windowsills
  4. De-web corners of the ceiling
  5. Sweep and mop floors
  6. Wipe down baseboards
  7. Dispose of expired food, and put the food that will expire sooner to the front
  8. Check all food for any signs of pest activity (mice droppings, dead/live bugs, chewed boxes/bags)
  9. Put everything back and enjoy your clean pantry!

Inspect the Perimeter and Seal Gaps and Cracks

Inspecting the perimeter of your home should be performed every season, but especially in spring, when most people spend less time outdoors during the winter. You will want to inspect your foundation and siding for gaps and cracks, weather stripping, and the roof for any damage or fallen foliage. If your home is protected by Spidexx Pest Control, we will perform a full perimeter inspection on every maintenance treatment.
