Carpenter Ants
Carpenter ants are extremely destructive pests that can cause costly damage to the structure of your home. They bury into wood to create tunnels for the colony. In fact you can usually tell you have a carpenter ant infestation by listening for the sounds of shuffling inside your walls. Another big sign that you may have an infestation is the presence of tiny piles of sawdust, especially in the corners of your home. These sawdust piles are called ‘frass’ and its the wood materials the ants push out behind themselves as the go further into the wood.
You can differentiate a carpenter ant from a typical ant because they tend to be longer. They grow to be about one inch long. They also have heart shaped heads, large jaws, elbowed antennae and are usually black or dark brown. They especially enjoy tunneling through wood when its damp, so one useful step to prevent the presence of carpenter ants is to regularly check for and repair any leaks you find in the home.
