All About West Des Moines
During its early years, West Des Moines was a large trading and shipping junction in Iowa. It was incorporated under the name of Valley Junction in 1893. It’s earlier history had a rocky start, but that didn’t keep the residents down . In 1914, Jack Prince built a 1 mile oval race track made of 980,000 feet of 2X4’s laid down. The track was one of 24 similar tracks nationwide and seated up to 10,000 people. At that time, it was a great boost to the economy, bringing in drivers from all over the world. However, the residents were soon to associate this track with the towns bloody past.
In 1915, an accident injuring several drivers, and killing a mechanic, caused the track to close down 2 years later. The community was deeply affected by this loss. The track’s memory will always be part of the community. The 980,000 feet of 2X4’s were salvaged for construction in different building throughout Valley Junction.
Again around 1922, the cities foundations were shaken because of a 22 month strike from machinists at the Rock Island shops. The strike put neighbors against each other and caused suffering on the community. Many residents were forced to choose to cross the picket line just to feed their families. Despite it’s rough history, West Des Moines is a booming community with a growing economy, housing market, and plenty of things to do!
