The City of Altoona

Nested twenty minutes northeast of the capital of Iowa – Des Moines; Altoona continues to be a developing community and a top choice for Iowa residents for livability and entertainment. Located in Polk County, the population is around 17,000. Some of the first American settlers were Anthony Yant and Gilbert T. Taylor, in 1854. The land was listed for sale in 1848, and after 6 years on the market was finally sold. After several resales, the David family ended up owning the land in 1868. Mr. Davis is credit for naming the city. The Latin word altus means “high”, and was chosen due to the location being the highest point on the Des Moines Valley Railroad, between Keokuk and Des Moines. Altoona was incorporated as a city in 1876.
